Associations and Influences

As human beings, though we like to believe ourselves to be individuals, and Masters of our own domains; we each know, regardless of our willingness to admit it that we are mostly all followers of others.

Additionally, we are not only followers but we desire inclusion and acceptance from groups or other individuals as a comfort and consolation to our fears of isolation and defenselessness. (As with all assertions made in our work, there will always be obvious cases where I am incorrect, however, our positions are meant to be generalizations applicable to the majority and in this case I believe a large majority) In this dependent and symbiotic position we feel protected or at least less the isolated target of those who see us as different.

In our preferred arrangement of being a group member or friend of one or more we gain a sense of confidence and security. We established elements of similarity with others and enjoy those factors we share or "have in common." In our current real-time reality as may have been the case for much of past times, we shape our personality and our identity to conform to the sense of social norms to which-ever group identity we have qualified to be a part of or have managed to glom onto by some limited measure.

Since this circumstance has been fully explored previously, I will advance with my discussion and end by saying that, two of the most primary subdivisions that identify persons are race or religion, and as such our further discussion will center on information related to these two types of delineations.

In our discussions here, we will consider a factor that based on scientific research shows both the dangers or an ongoing threat and the equally bright potential for a solution by modifiable preconditions. In two separate circumstances, we find that association and influences can be either a cause, magnifier or sustainer of a problem and troublesome mentality or that they can by determined effort and social standards require and accomplish beneficial and positive adjustment to an otherwise negative outlook. The selection of data for the findings listed obviously only provide the results of that study, but each are representative of correct and basic truths that can be duplicated and are highly likely to be a relatively reliable constant.

Those with whom one associates or those to whom one is exposed and whose social standards they are immersed in; has been shown and recorded to influence the behavior and attitudes of that person. Obviously, fitting into any society or social structure is important to everyone. Assimilation allows for cooperation and eases the difficulty of everyday existence versus purposefully being intractable and in-congruent which tends to produce frustrations in those who might be desirous to or at least willing to befriend, or at very least cooperate with you. Going with the flow, in a non-destructive or non-detrimental sense makes life less frustrating. A common outlook on this is that good manners (which includes politeness) are the grease that helps society run smoothly. So it is somewhat natural for an individual; unless obstinate or devout, Orthodox or somehow committed to a special manner of behavior; to make efforts to fit in with the habits and behaviors of those around them. These are the facts, they are not indisputable, but they are precise and meet a 90% level of confidence in their accuracy. That is, they are within two standard deviations of exact accuracy and, therefore, dependable correct 9 times out of 10.
