Etiam Tu: Eradicating Hatred Section 6 Hatreds: Other Forms and Considerations, and Prophetic Universalism

Prophetic Universalism II

Accumulation

Our character condition Hatred is a mosaic.

It is built from multiple tiny instances of rage, anger and frustration. With each passing instance of perceived slight, injustice and inequity that we endure, another block is put into place. They gather and build upon each other, gathering strength and power in the bonds between the previous pieces that have accumulated. As the parts come together and the picture which becomes one of Hatred, becomes more clear; we dwell upon it. It becomes an ever-increasing part of our lives and personalities, until finally at some point it's clear that we truly Hate someone, or something, or things, or groups of things, or people: because as far as we can tell they caused the feeling.

It is a necessity, like water seeking its own level, that we must find a responsible target to blame for this pent-up frustration, and physically transfer it to them, even if it's not by a physical act of our own. Someone else must suffer for the intense unhappiness we have accumulated. Unfortunately, often this is the wrong victim. Often our rage and need for relief lead us to the wrong perpetrator. Another reason for law and order to exist.

Rage is a blinding, passion that overwhelms rationality. Only slow deliberate investigation and verification can be trusted to be most accurate at delivering justice to the victim and the perpetrator. And it is quite often far from infallible and subject to be flawed or influenced by biased rationale. That being the case, we must understand that the issuance of violence in conjunction with extreme circumstances and judgment is most often unlikely to be just, unless the result of long deliberation free of biochemical influences. (As in rage, etc.)
