Ressentiment

FROM

Frustration Rage and Envy Enemy Prejudice and Bigotry Obsession = Hate

…. If we maintain this ill will towards them, wishing and hoping for their misfortune at every available opportunity: we are prejudiced against them. If we cannot recall what instance it was that occurred to justify our feelings, or if we have these feelings and justify them on behalf of what may have happened to a friend or family member in the near or distant past, this is prejudiced. If we have no recollection of any event occurring to ourselves or others specifically but simply point out or judge these others (our enemies) for any act, we disapprove of, (even if we or those we know are guilty of them also) whether it affects us personally or not, this is prejudiced. Or finally, when as part of our cultural development we are taught by example or exposure to the prevailing attitude of others in our identity group; that these others are to be disdain, shunned, and seen as inferior, with or without justifications and reasons explaining our own superiority; this is prejudiced.

This, however, is not the worst result that can occur, because the intensity of our attitudes can be higher or increased, and our feelings of disdain can result in our desire for harm to come to our enemies. If we reach the point of bigotry, we might actually hope for these inferior others injury or death. We might wish for their deaths or revel in their suffering. We might joke about or laugh at cases of disaster were members of their identity group are hurt or killed. Bigotry such as this is only one step from real Hatred. When we have lost our souls sufficiently to wish for harm to come to others, and laugh at their deaths or injuries, or joke about scenarios involving such physical acts of violence or natural disasters, when we apply the only good snake.... principle to them, then we have lost our humanity. ….
