Epictetus on Perception
This beginning portion includes quotes that support or relate to perception as previously discussed relative to Freud's input.
"Let death and exile and all other things which appear terrible be daily before your eyes, but chiefly death and you will never entertain any abject thought, nor to eagerly covet anything" - Epictetus
(as you see)
Epictetus seeks to ground the spirit of mankind in the true harsh realities of life and its struggles. Apparently, in his times, as certain as it is true of our times, humanity tends to lose sight of what things in life are truly important. In our modern times, we can all, if honest, agree that, except for the truly destitute, we are or have become a species that is consumed with possessions and creature comforts. In Western, especially American society, those who qualify as poor, (that is provided government assistance), (though not the poorest of this group) are regularly in possession of televisions, cell phones, automobiles, or DVD players, some designer clothes, etc.. Where those not even at the top of the economic ladder may have automobiles with these electronic media and communication devices built into the vehicle. In our Western societies, socially children judge and evaluate each other based upon material possession and outward displays of a family's economic status as reflected by the clothing worn by the child.
The psyche of the human in Western society, and perhaps many or the majority of peoples throughout the world is influenced, conditioned and trained, both intentionally and by common experience, to recognize evidence of the level of opulence of the person or family as an indicator of the true worth, level of influence, and actual importance when one is considering interactions with them. The level of consideration and respect offered to them is influenced by this materialistic valuation of them.
Epictetus sought to direct the minds of mankind in his time away from materialistic desires for acquisition or accumulation of objects and privileges and turn them towards the harsh realities that equalize us all.
To him it was important for us to turn our attention to the serious issues that exist in our world and remain focused on these problems so that we would not be distracted from dealing with the important issues of life. He felt that the blatant, deliberate exposure to these real, terrible issues on a daily and continual basis would lead us to an ongoing awareness of what is important: to such an extent that we could not ignore them and waste time on possessions and creature comforts.
This is consistent with Etiam Tu and our endeavor to Eradicate Hatred as has been discussed in the portion about empathy. This prescribed awareness of what Freud called Anake and Epictetus calls Tarache allows for us to develop and maintain a perception of reality that is correct and less biased by the trivialities of materialistic desires. Our ability to perceive reality clearly by exposure to its harshness and not just the aesthetically pleasing commercially beautified version of it serves us as profoundly as the North Star served early travelers and Mariners. Providing us a static and honest representation of what is truly right and accurate about our circumstances and our positions in the real world.
