5. Perception PART 3
Freud postulated that “we live in a world of our own perception”
4.) Our perception will only accidentally in rare moments correspond to what is actually going on.
This determination of Freud's contribution to our understanding of perception, as summarized by Dr. Gaylin calls into question the probability or likelihood that any of us, as human beings, ever have much of a clue as to what is actually going on. Its basis is not that our sense organs are unable to accurately receive information in a current real-time circumstance. Its basis is in the actual process of perception that is the conversion of stimuli into an accurate understanding of what is the meaning of the observed facts.
We as human beings, possibly more so than other life forms, perhaps not; are so influenced by our own concerns and desires, wishes and hopes for conditions to conform to the goals we have set or outcomes we want, that our understanding of what is actually going on is distorted. We in our understanding of existence both intentionally and unintentionally develop patterns in our thought producing processes that affect how we perceive various stimuli. This characteristic of human behavior is so common that our proclamation of this fact and indictment of our species is applicable to a very high percentage of the total populace. I estimate that this level of applicability is statistically within the confidence levels of 90 to 95% true of almost everyone, save a few highly disciplined and isolated, (physically isolated) individuals on this plane of existence.
To be able to go through life devoid of any personal interest in progress or outcome of one's daily existence has to be for all practical purposes impossible.
For those rare instances where biases do not affect the accuracy of our perception, chances are that they are generally due to some instance of ambivalence at or to that given fact, occurrence, concern or actions. With that being, said one can, and must agree that no one can exist free of their own influence on their own point of view. That being said the hopeful news about this reality is that we are more capable of correcting our inner perceptions than the outer ones.
I would like to clarify this before going any further by revisiting the difference between these. Please indulge my need to redundantly over explain the obvious.
Inner perceptions are the thoughts, ideas, concepts and understandings we have reached over time via a period of deliberation. Outer perceptions are those which are formed as soon as the stimuli is processed from the sense organ into the ego controlled perception of the mental apparatus.
