5. Perception
Freud postulated that “we live in a world of our own perception”
Each person is innately self-centered, it is nearly impossible to naturally be altruistic. The normal function of the ego is to be aware of the Perceptions received from exposure to stimuli from the outside world and the internal. Perceptions such as thoughts and understandings are arrived at as the mental process employs reason to explain the meaning and causes of past external perceptions.
The ego which is basically the self begins from that personal perspective.
The physical body, the animalistic nature of our being, and the awareness of reality as the circumstances we find ourselves in, all necessitate our perception being centered around us. This is not an indictment, but it may be a sentence we were given by nature/our Creator/or whatever. It is our bailiwick to exist within the confines of this paradigm, unless somehow we learn of, or invent a way to transcend this order of existence.
2.) Once we go beyond the struggle for food and shelter;the basic struggle for survival, we enter into the world of our own imagination. The unconscious part of the mind is called or controlled by or connected to, the Id. As we have discussed, this is the animalistic/primal nature of the human animal. As such, it is very important for us to understand that in this portion of the mental apparatus the processes which take place are in accordance with a completely different set of laws.
Like a computer that runs under two different operating systems, (And to be more detailed) where one system is able to exert some level of control, some level of influence, over the other generally, most of the time, but under certain situations, the secondary system becomes primary and controls all power usage, distribution and all peripherals. The Ids reaction to stimuli and its retention of the latent images/memories of the stimuli can and often do resurface in dangerously unpredictable and perhaps volatile ways. A perceived threat can result in the launch of a program of self-defense that can vary between fleeing the danger, all the way to a determination of the absolute necessity to exterminate the source of the danger. The Id is powerful and dangerous. This quality of unconsciousness differs quite significantly from that of the thought processing of the pre-conscious portion of the ego.
