Etiam Tu: Eradicating Hatred Section 5 a Pause to Consider and Reflect (contributions of Freud, Epictetus, etc. applied to Eradicating Hatred and Etiam Tu)

4. Rationalization

Freud pointed out the limits of reason and forced us to attend to our passions, and insisted that the rationale we use after-the-fact to explain our actions is often only Rationalization to disguise the emotionally driven intent of our behavior.

As human beings we are often in a situation where we have made a decision, taken an action, proclaimed a belief, accused another, etc. where we are, in fact, incorrect or wrong in our assertion, action, etc. This is common to many if not most people. (Perhaps a few who are very disciplined, quiet and slow to act, by course of deliberate concentration, exist) The nature of human existence, however, outside that of Monk's, nuns, etc. is to go through life motivated by our own desire, purpose, needs or intents. We live our lives seeing through our own eyes, encountering the obstructions and challenges that might usually be expected, and handle them in the manner most expedient to achieve our desired goals.

In so much as we care to be honest or ethical in our approach to these necessary hindrances and those required for sustaining life on a daily basis, "Anake;" we feel as though we have a right that is forthright in the modes employed to succeed at accomplishing our goal. Some of us are willing to employ techniques that others see as less than honorable, and may or may not believe their opinions to be correct. In all cases, though, unless we are isolated from all other people, we will, in the course of our actions be required to interact with others. This will either be directly, which is most common or indirectly: performing some task where another will encounter the by-products or effects of the actions at a time following our taking them. Unless we are like the monks, nuns, etc. who are deliberate in their efforts to be considerate of all their actions, we will inevitably make mistakes, missteps, misspeak or make errors in our judgment.
