Etiam Tu: Eradicating Hatred, Section 1B The Authoritarian Personality and its Role in the Continuing Existence of Hatred
Duplicitous Nature
The authoritarian is by definition someone who plays by the rules. If there are societal positions that direct behavior to meet a certain level in order to be considered correct, (for example politically correct) they will exhibit this behavior to remain compliant.
They will often display, benevolent, kind and generous behavior if that is the expected norm that they are to meet. They will be respectful of the rights of others to hold differing religious or political beliefs. They follow this approach because it maintains them in the class of the compliant. They are aware of the expectation that they would be opposed to some facet of society in any current real-time circumstance or situation, yet they managed to go along with the conventional wisdom about how to act or react in a given situation. However, they do so under a false pretense, often they do not approve or agree with society or government positions on a particular issue, and are unable to even acknowledge their disagreement with anyone other than with another member of their sect or order, that they know to also be suppressing their emotions to get along, as well. They hide their true nature and suppress theirs personal views to remain compliant. They sell out what they really think and restrain their desire to act or react in response to a stimulus they have a strong disagreement with, in order to remain compliant. The true opinion or point of view of the authoritarian personality can never be honestly attained unless they believe you to hold the same opinion, or have drawn the same obvious conclusion as they have and are also unable to express it. If they think you are an understanding kindred spirit, they may honestly portray their true feelings to you but no others.
